Just replaced 20yo fan/light combos with new ones, and how disappointing. 60W B10 bulbs are woefully inadequate... what can I do?

I had the same issue. I found bulbs that were 100 watt but used only 6.5 watts. They seem brighter than the ones that were 60 watts and should save on the power bill.

Over the last several years the EPA has rolled out legislation that regulates ceiling fans with lights. Briefly, this legislation mandates that ceiling fan light fixtures do not use more than 190 watts of electricity and that there be a mechanism in place that does not allow any ceiling fan with lights to operate beyond this wattage either by having a limiter or fuse installed in the light fixture or fan. SO, if you have 4 X 60 watt bulbs you are 50 watts over plus the fan usage. You may get more light from CFL's.
