How do I tell her to stop drinking so much?

You just tell her. Then you have to leave it up to her. There is nothing you can do to make an addict quit their drug of choice, and alcohol is her drug of choice. She has to recognize that she has a problem.

I wish it were simple, but addiction is very complicated.

Have you tried going to an Al-Anon meeting? They are very helpful as they are all in your shoes.

Hey hun, I'm sorry to hear this, like j_9 said you need to just tell her, my mother is a drunk, she has been for 6-7yrs, she has lost all her family because she put the drink first before any of us, I hope you get this sorted

You can talk to your Mom and explain how you feel about her drinking - you should do that, in fact. Get all your feelings out, explain why you want her to stop drinking. Then you have to let her make her own decision. She may not do anything about this, except to go and get another drink. You cannot do for her, what she cannot do for herself. But you can do something's for yourself. Get into Al-Anon, find a counselor to talk to so that you can sort through all your feelings and gain some knowledge in what is going on. You keep yourself physically and emotionally healthy. You do the best for yourself. Encourage your Mom to seek treatment but know you cannot force her.

Thank you all so much. I just need to sit her down and talk to her. Preferably when she's not drunk. And if she gets mad at me, it will be for her own good. Right?

She may get mad at you, yell, threaten, etc. But those are common tactics used by people who have drinking problems. So be ready for that and do not take whatever she says personally. As you are not at fault, not to blame, and not the reason she drinks. You extend a hand to help and hopefully she will be ready. Good luck to you!
