View Full Version : Knee pain?

For the last 5-6 months, my right knee has been hurting when straightened after being bent, or when just when it's bent. The pain is especially noticeable when I wake up in the morning. It's occurring more randomly now; it hurt more the first 4 months after I first noticed it, although it tends to hurt more after I run (I do track and field) or when I'm going up/down the stairs. (BTW, before and after running, I always stretch.) Also, I don't know if this helps, but I can bend my legs in really weird positions, which I do often (other people find this weird), so does this contribute to this pain? Oh, and my knee (right) seems slightly swollen? Compared to my left knee, which looks normal (I guess), my right knee is larger and possibly swollen. Thanks a bunch for any suggestions!

Have you talked to a doctor about this since you noticed it 5 or 6 months ago?

How old are you? What kind of diet do you eat? Are you overweight?

No, I haven't told anyone...

I'm 12, and I guess I eat a pretty balanced diet, although I hate drinking milk, which I know is bad, because bones and stuff... And no, I'm not overweight; on the contrary, I am underweight.

You seem to be involved in a lot of sports, physical activity. Do you take vitamins to compensate for the calcium you're lacking by not drinking milk?

It may be growing pains, but growing pains normally don't last for 6 months, so I'm inclined to say that that's likely not the problem.

Considering your activity it may be a lack of vital nutrients, like calcium. I'd tell mom and dad and talk to a doctor. At the least I'd start taking vitamins, a daily vitamin with all the essentials would be good. But I'm not a doctor, no one on this site is. This is just a suggestion, not a diagnosis. I'd talk to a doctor if I were you, or if I were you mom.

Good luck kiddo.

Wow, okay, thank you so much! I will talk to my mum about it. Hmm, I used to take these calcium gummy bear things, maybe I have to (unfortunately) start taking them again. Haha, thanks again! :)

Most people don't get the vitamins they need. You're active, and young. Your bones are still growing, and in order to do that they need the proper nutrition. Calcium is a big one, so is iron, vitamin D, and many other things.

A multivitamin is a good idea for anyone, but especially for a child that's likely not getting all the nutrients they need to grow.

Since you are experiencing pain, and it's been going on for a long time, it's definitely time to talk to a doctor about it. You're still growing, you are active in sports, you don't want lack of proper vitamins to end up stifling that growth and your hobbies. Time to talk to mom and dad and a doctor. :)

Keep us posted on how it goes.

Good luck kiddo. :)

Again, I cannot thank you enough! :)
I've asked my mum to get the vitamins again, and I suppose I'll have to try to consume more milk/calcium during the day! After a bit of research, I've found out that almonds and broccoli also provide calcium... yum! :) Maybe I can add those two to my diet, along with just milk for calcium.
Iron... Apparently chicken, beef, and almonds are good sources. Looks like almonds are pretty nutritious - iron, calcium, magnesium, too!
Thanks again; you've been extremely helpful! :D

You're welcome. But I'd still see a doctor about this pain, just to find out what's causing it, so you know what supplements you need to concentrate on.

Keep me posted kiddo. I have a daughter your age, so I'm always concerned about the health and welfare of kids your age. :)
