Hi there,

I became a resident alien in 2014 and received some interest income in my Fidelity account. I did not update my resident status until early January 2015. Now, Fidelity is going to issue me a Form 1042S for non-resident alien instead of Form 1099 INT. They claimed that because the resident status was updated in 2015, they can only issue the 1042S. I talked to several representatives asking for help, some have no clue at all, some just said they could not fix it.

What would you suggest me to do? Can I use 1042S for my 2014 tax return even if I file as a resident alien? If not, should I keep talking to Fidelity until they fix it?

Any advice or input will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Try to get the correct form from Fidelity, but if the information on the Form 1042-S is accurate, use it on your Form 1040 tax return.
