Hi,

A gas tech had told me that we have a wrong type of adaptor connected to steel elbow. See image below.

The gas tech pointed to the elbow joint, but did not tell me what kind of joint I needed to use. Does someone have any idea what can be wrong with it? What kind of adaptor is needed? Thanks.

That short piece between the elbow & valve should be a black steel nipple.
The nipple & everything on the right side of the valve should also be black steel (not galvanized).
Many jurisdictions will not allow pipe thread tape (must use pipe dope appproved for the type of gas [natural or LP] you have). Those who do allow tape usually require you to use the yellow tape intended for gas piping. I'd rather not see tape at all.

Thank you for the response. I'm located in California, so maybe the rule is to have it black steel.
So just making sure all the parts are black steel correct? It looks simple enough. Can this be a DIY job? Or do I need to get a tech guy / gas person to come fix?

It looks like the piece between the valve and the elbow is a pipe to flare fitting and maybe that shut off has the same configuration but usually the flare is on the other end , hard to tell with all the pipe dope. White Teflon is not gas approved, as Grady has noted. Galvanized may or may not be accepted. In days gone by, there was concern that the mercaptan additive, odorant, would react with the zinc galvanizing and eliminate the odorant. Safest is to go with black iron pipe. What way is the gas flow? From the angle of the picture, it looks like the gas goes from 1/2 to 3/4". Hopefully there is a union so you can separate the pipes and start over. You will need some pipe wrenches, gas approved pipe dope, my preference, or yellow Teflon. Make sure to turn off the gas at the meter too or you may/will get gas into the house. When you are done, get some dishwashing liquid, dilute it a bit and wet all connections to check for leaks. Get back if you have any more questions

Codes in different areas vary. I suggest calling your gas supplier & ask them who is allowed to do it. Gas is not something I suggest a homeowner do unless they are experienced in gas fitting. For a dryer 1/2" pipe is fine.
