I am going to replace an uncovered deck down the side of our home (60') with a new deck and want to add a roof off the side of our Craftsman-style home. To fit with the architecture I want to have large columns that I will face with stone and over sized boxed posts to match our large posts now.
How do I size the posts and beams required for a half roof (one half will be secured to the external house side and the rafters will rest on a large beam on top of large boxed posts on concrete poured supports.
What size should the concrete support be to support the weight of half the roof and the deck?
Dimensions: 60' x 8' with the deck being 7-8' off the ground. And the roof being 8' above the new deck. (I was thinking of having posts every 6-7' for appearances) Which I'm sure will make the load much lighter, as well.
I currently (without a roof) have 4 x 6 posts on 8' centers with 4 x 10 beams with 2 x 6 joists on 24" centers. With the deck canterlievered 18" over the beam; so it is 5.5' wide to the beam and then 7' to the rail. I think I'd like to widen it while doing this to 8', so there's room for furniture and still be able to walk by.
