I am an 18 year old living in Toronto. I was caught trying to take a $250 iPhone accessory from the Apple store in the Eaton Centre. Security took me in and then when the police arrived they told me I was being charged for theft under $5000 and they gave me the dates for screening and first court appearance. What would you suggest I do? Should I try to hire a lawyer? It would be difficult for a university student living in Toronto. Please help! I was so reluctant in doing what I did and I regret it so much. I don't want this one mistake to dictate my career paths or my life

I believe Canada has Legal Aid programs. Canada also has a program called diversion. Firs first time offenders, this program allows you to do some community service at the end of which your record will be cleaned up. Since you were caught red handed, you should ask for that but consult with an attorney first.
