Has anyone heard of trying a baking soda douche to reduce acidity in vagina in order to get pregnant? My fertility specialist is suggesting this and I wanted to see what anyone has heard. Thanks!

Good Gosh! That's a new one on me! How long have you actively tried to get pregnant? We had sex every other day and that worked for me!
Heavens no. I have never heard of this one. I have been told by all doctors I know to avoid douching at all costs unless it is with medications prescribed by the doctor for certain medical conditions.
I just don't understand this as conception does not take place within the vagina.

We are being told that it is possible that I have too acidic of an environment and that may be killing off the sperm and that a baking soda douche right before intercourse on the day of ovulation might help. We were told this after we had a negative post coital test. This was just the next step in figuring out why there were very little sperm left in the mucous.

Has your husband been examined and tested? You may want to seek a second opinion.

He has been tested twice and everything is fine and he has been tested for antibodies and he has none. So there is really no explanation as to why there were no sperm in the mucous after intercourse other than possible acidity.
I guess it is possible, and after your explanation, it does sound reasonable. I had just never heard this. You know you learn something new every day.

Google preseed, that may be your answer. It is a spermfriendly lubricant that helps sperm travel. It's about $12 I think. I have heard many success stories about it. Google it and see if it's for you. Goodluck

Yup, Dr. Jonathan Scher at Mt. Sinai suggests it (see http://www.parents.com/parents/qa.jhtml?qaid=/templatedata/parents/qa/data/1137.xml&catref=prt8 for info). It works by making the vagina alkaline, which is friendlier to sperm.
A friend of mine swears her mom was able to get pregnant because of this home remedy - her doctor recommended it in the 1930's and said that 40 of his infertile patients had become pregnant after trying it for a few months.

Like I said, WOW, I learn something new every day!! I will remember this and take it into my OB rotation in the fall.

Like I said, WOW, I learn something new every day!!! I will remember this and take it into my OB rotation in the fall. Isn't it wacky what kinds of things work sometimes? Like the adage about reducing sugar intake that they're now finding really does help (regulates hormones). I'm thinking the baking soda treatment probably works best for male factor infertility. OkFaith, they always say to go to a reproductive endocrinologist if you don't get pregnant within a year (if you're younger than 35) and within 6 months (if you're older than 35 - I'd say even less than that if you're pushing 40). I went to an RE last year and discovered that I had an ovarian cyst and a fibroid that were making it impossible to get pregnant, no matter what we tried. (Still not pregnant, dangit, but we're working on it!).
