I have a 1953 home got a new diverter valve from ace it is about a 1/4" longer the diverter won't divert it only shuts off water.

Diverter is not suppose to shut off water. It diverts water to two or more outlets. 1/4" extra length makes no difference in operation of diverter as the length refers to the length of the stem only and is sold in several sizes to accommodate thickness of the wall for trim installation purposes. Diverter body remains the same no matter how long the stem is.

There are many very similar looking diverter stems. Make sure you got the right one for your faucet.
