A lot depends on how large the room is. Around here where I live, in Rock Island, IL, the going rate for one coat of paint is .50 cents a square foot. And, for two .70 cents a square foot. Both of these figures include the cost of the paint and materials. Also, this is a rate for if the walls are absolutely flat with no texture to them. Two coats are always necessary, unless you are painting over the same sheen and color as before that has been applied recently.

As far as removing wallpaper, I would figure at charging $15.00 to $20.00 per hour for that. That can be estimated or actually timed out for the job as you do it.

Puttying and sanding are part of the charge for painting. If there is extensive work in that regard to be done, I would figure in a little bit more.

The important thing about giving what you will charge for a job is to be fast, and very neat with an estimate. Also, stick to the fee that you are going to charge. If you charge a little too much and find that the job really did not take you as long as you thought, then take a little off the final bill. Makes you look good in the customer's eyes.

Make sure that you have a written contract for the job, references names and phone numbers on hand, and painter's liability insurance.
