We are having a New Propane Fired Furnace Installed Dec. 15th.. Which is 23 days away.. My Query is , Will we have enough Heating Oil in the Tank to get us there? The location is Eastern Ontario.. We keep the Stat at a Constent 18C'(64'F).. The gauge on the Tank is showing 1/4 Full and I've been told that is really not a true Reading as there could be as much as 50 litres or better of Fuel Oil in the Tank when it reads empty..

Reason I ask the Oil Tank is being removed during the Installation process,we will not be compensated $$$ for what's left in the Tank as any and all Fuel Oil dropped in our Tank is deemed Contaminated at point of Delivery.. Beauty.. Cheers Thanks

Of course you won't be compensated, and yes, the oil in your tank is contaminated and not fit for use anywhere else because it has been sitting in rust and dirt at the bottom of the tank.

It has been a mild day in eastern ontario, norplan, I live here too so I am not worried about freezing to death, but I have a gas furnace and keep a very low temp in the house at night.

Yes they are correct about how much you have left in your tank; it is probably more then a quarter full. It is almost the same as the fuel gauge in your car reading empty when you have at least one quarter to get you anywhere.

So, were you not prepared for this?

Umm.. vital statistic missing... the size of your tank!

In the US, tanks are often either 250 gal or 275 gal. 275 gallons = 1044 liters. As you can see, 50 liters is 'nothing,' and as tickle said, it's the oil you don't want on the bottom of the tank. If the last oil gets pulled into the burner/boiler, you will have a whole house full of oily smoke. Not dangerous, but a mess.

I'm not so sure that a quarter of 1044 = 260 liters is enough to get you to Dec 15. Do you? You should have an idea of what you used last year mid Nov to mid Dec.

Your oil slips should show degree days. If you don't know how to estimate need from now to Dec 15, call your last year's oil supplier for their opinion.

"Absolutely Watson".. Won't be a problem adding a few litres if need be, it's the wasting litres that I won't be compensated for that Rankles Me.. lol.. Once the changeover is done the Supplier will be the same... Cheers

@ joypulv... It's your Standard 900 Litre Tank...

900 litres standard in Ontario, and all depends on how efficient his insulation is, and what temp he keeps it at throughout the day and nigh
He probably cant afford to top it up, especially when he is getting a new system in. He is going to have to cross his fingers and pray until then.

You are Correct Sir on the your closing sentence... lol... As I say, It's the Rankle Effect and the Delivery Guy being Trigger Happy.. They always complain if they can't drop 400 litres at any one time... lol.. Rest Assured I'll be on the Supplier when the gauge reads empty.. lol..

@ joypulv ,We know all to well the consequences if we let the tank get dangerously low.. Cheers Thanks.

I don't see 4/900L lasting til Dec 15, IMO.

Spoke to the Dispatcher with our Fuel Oil Supplier this Morning.. As the Propane will be coming from the same Supplier and the Tanks have already been placed and ready for the changeover.. We keep our Stat set a Constent 18'C(64'F) the float on the gauge showing 1/4 Full.. The lad said the Tank is actually 1/2 full , unless we get 4/5 days straight of being locked in a deep freeze of -20C' We should be Ok for Dec 15th Changeover.. Not to Worry he says, if need be they will only drop enough in the Tank as required.. lol.. Cheers Thanks
