The ions at the edges of a NaCl crystal are not 6-co-ordinated but, presumably, 5- or less. Thankfully, crystals do not collapse from the edges inwards, but why don't they?
Textbooks ignore this completely. Teachers say: "Edge-effects," which means what, exactly.
