Most likely Braxton Hicks or "practice" contractions. Do they tend to subside a little when you lie down or walk? Get something to eat? Make sure that you are having plenty to drink, as being a bit dehydrated can cause uterine contractions. True labor contractions will usually grow stronger, get closer together, and start to last longer.
Another possibility is prodromal labor.....often more intense than Braxton Hicks.
Have you contacted your doctor or midwife? When in doubt, always wise to give a call when something occurs that causes you concern. You can call anytime, that is what they are there for.....in part to ease your mind and also to make the judgement call of when they may want you to get checked.
