I am an F1 visa student (since 2012) with 1099-Misc (Schedule C) income in 2013. After claiming all deductions ($13000 income minus $6100 minus $3900 minus $4000 tuition credit) , my taxable income was Nil (net loss). When I tried to e-file, it showed an estimated 1800$ in social security/medicaid taxes due.

I decided not to file/pay these taxes because under F1 visa I am exempt from social security/medicaid taxes - am I right in doing this?

Do I still need to file any forms regardless and which ones? Do I actually owe any taxes?

First, you are a non-resident alien, so you CANNOT file electronically.

You also are NOT eligible for any education credits or tuition deduction.

You DO have to file, but you must MAIL your return and submit Forms 1040NR and Schedule C plus Form 8843.

If you live in a state with a state income tax, you must also file the state return. THAT state return can be filed electronically.
