"diet" drinks, not so much as they switch the sugar for artificial sweeteners.
Augmented waters, with added fruit juice, vitamins and minerals can help, but are NOT a panacea.

Drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day, does in fact help you lose weight. By flushing out the toxins, the fat build up in your veins also goes with it. Everything is filtered through your kidneys, which is the cleansing stop for your body.

You may be surprised that diet sodas may add to your weight, not decrease it. They are also thought to potentially be more harmful to your kidneys, and possibly increase the risk of developing diabetes... more so than regular soda, which is bad enough for you. Dark sodas in particular.
You will be far better off with water and tea as far as both health and weight loss go.
If you look at the waters with added vitamins, check the sodium and sugar (sweetener) content. Go for the lowest amount you can find in the choices you have available. Some brands are better than others.

The problem with diet drinks is that they trick the body. They think they should be getting specific number of calories, but when they don't show up and your blood sugars start to drop it will signal a need for energy. Trigger a hunger response, after that you will consume more calories than you would have normally. This will lead to a LARGE glucose spike and your body will store all that wonderful energy as fat.
So no, diet drinks don't help with diets. It was a good idea to begin with, but it doesn't work like that. Sugary drinks, soda, and the like should be avoided if you're trying to lose weight. They're fast empty calories. Look up and read about the glycemic index.
