View Full Version : Why doesn't our main shutoff stop the hot water in our kitchen sink from running?

I would like to replace the faucet in our kitchen since it does not shut off properly. It's a single handle Moen faucet. The shut off valves underneath were replaced about a year ago, but the hot water shut off valve does not turn. (No problems with the cold water at all.) I tried to shut off the water from the main shut off valve in the basement. It turns off all the water in the house except for the hot water in the kitchen sink.

There is probably some residual pressure in the HW heater. Open the hot tap and let run, may take a minute.

Hi rfunke (https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/members/rfunke.html)

I would suggest that you take a pair of pliers to the handle of the shut off valve under the sink and give it a slight turn... if the valve is only a year old it will loosen without much trouble, I promise! If you simply don't want to do that, then as Ma0641 said, you should be able to shut the water main off, open all faucets in the home including to the lowest fixtures in the home and the outside faucets and you should be able to replace the faucet with no issues!

Good luck!

If only the hot side is the problem, turn off cold water input valve at the water heater.
