My emerson lw6907 motor is from a washing machine it appears to have the usual number of wires and colors I think they are nema standards aren't they. Does my motor use a capacitor? Is that black plastic thing built on to it a capacitor?
It has two speeds 1725 and 1140, thank you for your help, richard stanley.

The black plastic device is a start capacitor. It is wired to the start winding with the centrifugal switch wired in series. Here is a diagram: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8010163/Emerson%20lw6907%20motor.pdf
You did not say what type of machine it was in, but here are some more diagrams: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8010163/Maytag%20Washers.zip

Almost all of them are about the same as far as motor wiring goes, just never wire two speeds together where they can get power at the same time. Use your meter to wire any motor.
