I'm not sure if this is the right spot or I should post this in another forum. So please bear with me.

A friend of mine recently posted on FB a picture of her and another friend on vacation in Arkansas. The picture was her other friend sitting on a porch and she captioned it "A porch monkey in Arkansas". The first time I saw the post I was shocked because I've always thought the term "porch monkey" is a racial slur. I know that it also means a lazy person in some areas but I've always been aware that that term is something negative and shouldn't really be used.

Now I am not sure if my friend didn't know, or is racist. I don't know if I should bring it up? And how?

Here's an option - don't be the "bad guy", let another one of her FB friends mention it first. It's possible it's not an issue with any of them.

I'd call her on the phone and let her know... don't call attention to it on FB... that gives them a chance to edit it and save face if it was an honest mistake, not thinking of other contexts the phrase can be used..

I've never heard the expression, but I'm in Canada, eh.

Maybe the best thing is to let it go. If it is that obvious a slur, somebody else will surely mention it?
