All right, I already made a doctors appointment for as soon as possible to get a blood test done, but questions are buzzing in my mind and honestly I'm the nervous type of person to begin with. We've been trying to conceive for a few months now. This month I felt some obvious symptoms around the time that I would get my period, one big symptom was breast tenderness and growth which I've never had before. Then 3 days before I started spotting dark brown which has also never happened before, It turned into spotting reddish brown but it was so light, not like my period at all so I was convinced it was something different, my periods have always been consistent and always heavy flow the first few days, never spotting.

After 3 days in the morning I took a hpt, it came back as a very faint positive but you can definitely see the line. I was happy but wanted to make sure since we have been trying, a few hours later I took another one and no line, I took another test this morning and tonight and still no line. The light spotting is on and off, yesterday it stopped in the afternoon and was completely gone, today it came back again for most of the day, but always light never heavy, enough to change a panty liner a few times for comfort but not soaking it either. No cramps or pain but feeling a bit gassy which is unusual.

When I took the second hpt an hour ago I noticed I had a very small blood clot in my liner. It was about the size of a pinky nail and very very dark, almost looking black. I know I won't know for sure until I take a blood test, but could passing a small clot be normal? I thought this was implant bleeding, could it still be if I've been spotting lightly on and off for 4 days? Does the two negative tests after the positive mean I could have had an early mc? I'm nervous and sad that I might have been pregnant and now might not be, any kind of guidance will help until I can get into the doctors. Thank you!

Hi Artist13,

It is possible there was an early loss, it is fairly common, but most women never know unless they are checking for pregnancy early on. Although usually you would notice cramping and more bleeding as well. Many women will think it is just an off period.

It is also quite possible that you are pregnant and did notice some implantation spotting, which is not noticed often, but is more common than most people realize. Did you read the positive result in the time stated on the test? If tests are read after the first few minutes (the most common time frame) you can get a faint line that may look positive.

It is early yet, sometimes there won't be high enough levels of hcg to register. If you still don't have a period, and decide to test again, do so when you first wake up as there tends to be higher concentrations of hcg since you haven't been having fluids that can dilute the results. Some women will have some spotting or light bleeding in early pregnancy as the levels of hormones adjust. At this point all you can do is wait and see what the test results show. Good luck!
