What causes slugs to crawl onto the sides of a house?

Usually mildew, a food source. Cool moist air is also somewhat attractive, so checking the weatherstripping might be a good idea.

Controlling them is best accomplished by baiting. Metaldehyde baits are fairly effective and available at most hardware and variety stores. The old folklore way is to put some beer in a disposable shallow dish (think aluminum pie pan) out in the evening. The hops aroma attracts them and the alcohol desiccates them.

Hi becky, the metaldhyde baits work I use it. About the other method, I hate to see good beer go to waste.

Don't use good beer. Use American beer.

I use diamataceous earth; it works well and is environmentally safe. It cuts their little bodies to pieces instantly.
