You get pregnant by having sex around your ovulation time. To find out if you are pregnant you take a pregnancy test using first morning urine after your period is about 2 weeks late.

Some women will become pregnant the first time they have sex... some after a few months of trying... and some after a year or more of trying. It is very individual.

Have you missed a period?

Have you tried a pregnancy test? Are your periods usually regular or are they irregular?

If your periods are irregular, you are most likely not ovulating regularly either. This will cause you to have fewer chances at becoming pregnant as you can only become pregnant at the time of ovulation, like J_9 said. If you haven't already, you may want to speak to your doctor about determining a reason for the irregular cycles. Sometimes there can be options to help them to become more regular.

Here's the basics:

As J_9 said, you can only get pregnant from having sex close to when you would ovulate. The majority of sperm live just a few days, some a bit longer, while the egg, once released, will only be able to be fertilized for up to 24 hours (the first 12 are thought to be the ideal time), this is why sex needs to be close to ovulation for pregnancy to occur. Otherwise, sperm die off, and there is no egg available. You only ovulate once a cycle.

Most often you would ovulate about 12-16 days BEFORE a period is due. This can vary a bit from woman to woman however as cycle lengths vary, and some women ovulate sooner or later than the norm. If you have a regular period, than it is likely you are also ovulating on a regular basis (ovulation, or the preparation for ovulation, is what starts the process for a period). If you have irregular periods, than most likely you are also not ovulating each month. Sometimes this can be changed depending on whether a reason (such as hormone imbalance) can be determined.

You can also try one or more of the following to possibly determine when you might be likely to ovulate. They all can take a few months or so to notice a possible pattern. Temping and charting.....basal body temperature (charting for a rise in temp that stays up until your next period....the rise usually happens a day or two after ovulation, so you would want to start having sex several days before you would expect the rise). Ovulation predictor kits (tests for the hormone that rises in preparation for ovulation...they work like a pregnancy test). Watching for changes in cervical mucus (most often it will become more fluid, stretchy, and clearer close to ovulation). You can research these online for more detailed information.

Having sex prior to ovulation provides the best chance at pregnancy, but even if you timed it well, pregnancy is not guaranteed to happen as timing is only part of it. This is why it can take some couples many months before a pregnancy occurs, even if they are trying regularly.

Most couples will become pregnant within a year of trying, but some will take longer. Most doctors do not even consider it necessary to do any fertility testing until after a couple has been trying for at least a year... or after about 6 months if you are older. It would be a good idea to see your doctor for a preconception visit to discuss your cycles sometimes being irregular and your desire to become pregnant.

It would also be wise to start taking a prenatal or a multivitamin with at least 400 mcg of folic acid (most will have that, if not more). This is not to help you become pregnant, but to help in the prevention of certain birth defects that can occur in very early pregnancy should you become pregnant.
