I've always had a regular period. I came off the pill in August last year and was still regular then. 4 months ago I was 1 week late, then the month after that a week late again, then last month I was 3 weeks late and this month I'm at 5 weeks late and still counting! I've gone to my doctor and he said that we need to have a "history" of 6 months then he can reffer me to a gynecologist. I've been told to do one pregnancy test a week and they're all negative, but I have no idea what's wrong with my body! This is driving me insane as my partner and I are trying for kids! Any thoughts?

Hi cour9078,

I've not heard of needing 6 months history before a referral can be made. What has your current doctor done so far in trying to determine a reason for the change in your cycles? I would check and see if the referral situation has to do with your insurance... call your insurance company directly to get clarification. If it is simply your doctor's policy, then perhaps you can actually set an appointment with a gynecologist yourself now. Ask friends, family, or coworkers for recommendations.

If your current doctor hasn't done any sort of testing at this point, I would definitely see a gynecologist. If the idea of waiting is simply your doctor's way of doing things, I would also consider getting another doctor. Better to have someone who is proactive, and who responds in a timely manner to your concerns.
