I have a Craftsman rider mower with a 17.5 HP Briggs & Stratton engine. The starter has trouble turning the engine past a certain area which appears to be the high compression cycle of the engine. If you turn the engine by hand past this spot the starter will then again crank the engine. The load this puts on the starter quickly kill the battery and I have to hook up jumper cables to give it an extra boost. I don't think it's a ring gear problem but not sure what it is. The engine compression just seems to be to high in this one spot and makes the starter work to high to get past it. Was hoping someone has an idea on what I should look for

Have you run a compression test? If the battery dies that fast, may just be a battery. Not a ring gear.
