Kitchen drain has a musty/sewer smell. I have already tried baking soda/vinegar and recently acid drain cleaner the smell is worse once water is run in the sink and is starting to smell the living room up too. I had a rarely used dishwasher removed a couple of years ago and a second master bathroom sink with the drain pipes taken apart and never fixed, we were just going to remove this sink and vanity to make more room but never did. I'm wondering if something should have been done to these instead of leaving them that could be causing this smell.

Hi PD

Look at the master sink drain piping and make sure that the drain pipe got capped. If the drain pipe has a PTRAP on it and was not capped off then the PTRAP has dried up and is letting sewer gasses into the home. Here, if this is the case, cap the drain pipe off to resolve the issue (can just pour water in drain for now).

If the master bath sink is not the issue then maybe it is the removed dishwasher that left an uncapped drain pipe/PTRAP behind...check under sink and in the basement under the dishwasher (if you have a basement) for an uncapped drain pipe...again, pour water in the PTRAP or cap the line if you find an unused drain pipe.

Start there...

Did your dishwasher drain into a garbage disposal or did it drain into a branch tailpiece as shown below? Back to you, Tom
