Can you deduct travel miles to and from a Hospital or a Nursing Home to visit
Your spouse? The miles and cost do add up large.

The first issue is whether you have medical expenses significant enough to deduct - you may deduct only the amount of medical expenses that exceeds 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. However, the only travel expenses that are deductible as a medical expenses are those "paid for transportation primarily for, and essential to, medical care." Ref: Publication 502 (2013), Medical and Dental Expenses (http://www.irs.gov/publications/p502/ar02.html#en_US_2013_publink1000179021) Travel to accompany a child to a hospital would qualify, but I don't believe your regular back-and-forth trips do.

Ebaines,

This year the cutoff is 10%, unless you are 65 years of age or older.

OK, good to know. I always though 7.5% was a pretty high hurdle - 10% makes it even more so.

Yes, I know; one of the side "benefits" of ObamaCare.
