Hot water heater does not have a pipe on the pressure relief valve and I need to add one. Can I run it down into the pan? Is that to code? Thanks.

Code today requires it be vented outside but I see a number of older units that are pointed down to the pan.

In Michigan I have done this and passed inspections many times.

Yeah, as always, codes differ by state, but in most cases, stopping the T&P relief valve pipe about 6" above the water heater pan is acceptable. Installing an AUTOMATIC WATER HEATER SHUT OFF VALVE with a sensor in the pan would be something to consider if this water heater is in a finished basement.
