We have recently disconnected the washing machine in our flat ready to let the property. I need to put a temporary cap on where the waste pipe from the washing machine joined the piping under the sink. Can you tell me what exactly I will need for this? I don't want to change the fitting under the sink as the tenant will want to plumb in a washing machine. I just need to cap it temporarily as water flows into the cupboard under the sink when the tap is turned on.

Can someone help me with this?

There are various pvc caps you can use which are intended to be glued on, you can apply thick grease instead of glue. Threaded PVC Cap, 2" (30162) at Aubuchon Hardware (http://www.hardwarestore.com/threaded-pvc-cap-605270.aspx) You must have the correct size so measure the OD of you pipe

You need the right cap to fit the pipe you have under your sink... we however have no idea exactly what you have and what size it is therefore we can't be specific on EXACTLY what you need to get.

You'll need to take a picture of the pipe setup and post it here for us to be able to tell you EXACTLY what is needed to temporarily cap this. Otherwise, snap a picture and bring it to the home improvement store...people there should be able to help by working off the picture...;)
