View Full Version : What do I need to hook up my gas stove?

I'm trying to hookup my brand new gas stove I have everything to hook it up but I keep seeing a gas shut off valve is that piece really needed to hook the stove up. Also I have a gas dryer do I need a gas shut off valve for the dryer as well. Please I need help

Yes. Code requires gas shut off valves for any gas appliance. Otherwise, how would you be able to work on the appliance without turning off the gas to the entire house. Gas is nothing to play with. You need special tools, pipe dope or gas rated teflon, not the white stuff. From your questions, I would recommend a professional.

In my neck of the woods only a certified technican plays with the gas hook up and appliances.

As mentioned, every gas appliance needs a shut off valve. In terms of a gas stove, the shut off valve must be behind the stove and then you want to install a 3 foot flexible gas connector in between that shut off and the connection to the stove gas valve. Further, all gas stoves come with ANTI.-TIP devices...please do not treat this trivially and install it as it is not only required by code, but it is a FACT that these devices save children's lives!!!

The gas dryer rules are basically the same...shutoff to flexible connector...NO anti.-tip device needed here (no pots of boiling water to worry about!!).
