When an exponent is a fraction the numerator means "to the power of" and the denominator is the inverse of that. So for example 2^{1/2} is the square root of two, 2^{1/5} is the fifth root of 2, and 2^{5/3} is the cube root of two raised to the fifth power. Just as with normal fractions you can simplify the fractional exponent to eliminate common factors. For example 2^{6/4} is equivalent to 2^{3/2} = 2 \sqrt 2.
