We took our 8 year old, normally healthy Pitt bull to the vet a week ago today. As posted before he was diagnosed with staph infection and ear infections in both ears. We have seemed to get the staph under control for now. However, his ears are really bad. The veterinarian prescribed Gentizol which is a ointment that is inserted into the ear canal and messaged for 15-30 seconds. I didn't notice until a few days ago that my poor dog was having noticeable hearing loss. I decided to so some research and learned that the Gentizol can, but very rarely, cause hearing loss. So, I did some at home test to see if he was indeed having issues hearing. Sure enough he is not hearing anything... :( I have called the vet and he gave me some ear wash to rinse all of the left over meds out and also prescribed a different ear drop for the infection. Has anyone ever has any issues with Gentizol in any animal? If so, did their hearing come back? The vet said that it can come back, but we will not know for 3 weeks or longer. I am very sad that this has happens.

Gentizole is known to cause deafness. You need to contact your vet right away and let them know about this issue. If I were you, I'd stop the ear meds right away. Your vet will more than likely tell you to discontinue use as well.

Gentamicin, which is the main antibiotic in Gentizole, is toxic to the ears. You really don't know if your dog is going to have a reaction until you use it.

Their hearing does come back over time. It may take awhile.

Thank you for your response.

We did get him into the veterinarian. He provided us with an ear wash and prescribed new Antibiotic drops. He also informed me that our dog has had a reaction to the gentamicin. He said that his hear may or may not restore fully. I am hoping to hear from some who reads this that they have experienced this while giving their animal Gentizol. And how long, if at all, it took for their pets hearing to return.

I feel really bad for our dog. He seems to be very confused. I have been working on hand commands, but still sometimes forget that je can not hear now. :(

We had a dog at the hospital react to Easotic drops. She did go completely deaf. Her hear returned after a couple of weeks. Everyone is different in how the react to certain things. He may get his hearing back quickly or it may take some time.

Do you know of any bad side effects from tresaderm? It seems as if his ears are not getting any better. The vet didn't do another exam... he just sold me the other prescription. I am supposed to call on Monday for a check in.
