View Full Version : Bathtub lever stopper and plumbing code

I am putting in a new bathtub and purchased a trip lever stopper. When hooking up the plumbing to the tub, my plumber informed me that this style of stopper was against code and that I needed to use a lift/turn type stopper. I have never heard of this and can't find anything in the code. Is he correct or just didn't want to bother with the [likely unfamiliar to him] stopper kit I purchased?

Hi Deoth12

I am not aware of any plumbing codes that will NOT allow a trip lever tub waste assembly to be installed in a tub. To double check this, give your local plumbing inspector (or the plumbing inspector in the next town/city) a quick call and just ask him/her without giving out the name of the plumber (could be his/her cousin). The inspector will know local codes, for sure!

Ask your plumber to quote you the code. In over 59 years in the trade I have never come across a code that prohibits using a trip lever stopper on a tub. I think your plumber was dead wrong. Was he a licensed plumber? Back to you, Tom
