The pvc drain in the tub broke off while trying to install a new drain pice, can it be fixed without taking the whole tub out? If so what do I need to do?

Is the tub on the ground floor? Is it accessible from the wall behind the tub faucet? Is it accessible from under the tub [crawlspace or the basement]?

Yes the tub is on the ground floor and it is a surround tub so no access from wall. Probably accessible from under the tub.

Please be a little more specific. What exactly broke? The tailpiece that connects to the trap? The overflow tube that connects the overflow plate with the tee to the tub shoe? The tub shoe itself? What?? How's the tailpiece connected to the trap? Glue or a compression fitting? Back to you, Tom

Access is important. You can change a tub waste from the wall behind or from under. There is typically a space cut out of the floor to allow this.
Also you can use either a glue type [solvent weld] tub waste or a slip joint [nut and washer] type. Try to use a 1 1/2" basket and not a 1 1/4". Use pipe dope on the threads od the basket and putty under the flange of the basket for a good seal. Check to verify also a good seal on the overflow.
