I turned the valve under the sink in the bathroom off. I was trying to turn the flow of the hot water up but instead I turned it off. I turned it back on immediately and only a trickle of water came out. I haven't had water flowing in my sink since. What's wrong?

It sounds like some crud got loose and clogged up the aerator at the end of the spout. Use a pair of pliers and unspin the aerator and clean it...should resolve the issue!

Also make sure the handle is not spinning and not opening the valve.

Because Bertia said, "I haven't had water flowing in my sink since", the problem will not be with the handle unless this is a faucet with two separated valves...which is highly unlikely over the last few decades or so...;) Most likely, hot and cold water flow are not working by the description and the only realistic answer is the aerator getting plugged up!

I have had shut off valves break internally both in the open, and shut positions and had to be replaced.

Yeah, touching these valves can lead to replacement if the washer breaks off or the stems shears, but in this case, since it sounds like both hot and cold are affected ( "I haven't had water flowing in my sink since"), I'm pretty sure this is nothing more than a plugged aerator! Have a good day!
