I read this book over 10 years ago in high school and have been looking for it every since.
1) In the title is probably 'shoe' or 'slipper'
2) The main character is a female candy-maker
3) She meets up with some others who show her a cache of weapons (she gets stuck going through the hole ad cursed herself for sampling the candy)
4) The group tells her about how they think a long believed extinct/ forgotten enemy is going to attack again
5) Later on in the book, they part of the group are just returning to some ruins they are sheltering in when they find it surrounded by the extinct/ forgotten enemy
6) Inside the ruins there is only the candy-maker and another man whose injured his head and is unconscious. To combat the horde she holds several swords aloft and they shine, scaring away they enemy.
7) There is watercress sandwiches and peppermint
