View Full Version : Frozen pipe
I have a supposed frozen pipe, its been -40 C here the past 2 weeks!. I don't have access to the water valve in the basement... the cold water tap is NOT working/running a drip (sinks and bathtub, toilet tank not refilling)... the hot is running smoothly, scalding hot in fact!. please assist me: how best to thaw? Will it naturally thaw in this weather over a day? Do I leave the tap not running slightly on? :( PS- I've turned up my suite heat (radiator) to the max, I asked the suite on the main floor/basement to turn up the heat (central air) its at 22C now, and I've left the undersink cabinets wide open to let in warm air!!
PS- there are separate hot and cold water valves/knobs/handles?. the second sink has a split? Valve and when I swivel it to the cold side there is a bit of cold water that will run, I get hopeful but then that soon goes hot... strangely though, since I left my other sink's cold water tap slightly on (just in case there's a flow), the water on that tap gets water flowing when I fiddle with the swivel tap on the split valve!

Can you tell me where this frozen pipe is located? Since you still have hot water. This means is being fed by a cold water pipe. So you have some cold water in your unit. If you know where the pipe is you can take a hair dryer and attempt to thaw it out. If that doesn't work for you. Can you give me more details? Back to you, Tom
Hi tom,
The sinks, bathtub and toilet have their plumbing on the north side of the house; as I'm not the home owner I can't access the basement plumbing nor can I knock out any drywall. The cabinet sink, bathtub, and free standing split?valve sink use flexible supply tubes, running out from the drywall or linoelum flooring (they don't feel cold at all). The hot water itself is supplied from the boiler in the basement. I am on the third floor house suite; the second floor house suite is also confirmed to not having any cold water running, the main floor still has good flowing hot and cold water! Using a hair dryer, I've read about but I don't think you're asking me to blow dry the pipes with the p traps exposed, so please do let me know how I can proceed? If I need to get a plumber in? Thanks
