I had my wisdom teeth taken out on 12/27 and today is 1/2 and this morning I got up and had no pain at all, no swelling, and everything was great. It was also my first day back to school and so I used my mouth much more than I did at home. Towards the end of the day, my top right gum had started to hurt, but not like a sharp intense pain, more like a slow dull pain. I assumed it was because I had been up and moving for the first time in a long time. Anyway, soon I noticed that the gum had started to swell a lot. I assumed that it wasn't any big deal so I just ignored it, but now I am kindve worried. After dinner the swelling had not gone down much so I took a flashlight and looked in my mouth where the swelling was and I noticed that it is very swollen and there is a little black mark that was bleeding. I would say that it is probably a bruise or blood blister. Anyway, the bruise is still bleeding as normal (which is not much at all), but I'm just wondering if it is normal to have your gum swell up all of the sudden and develop bruising and even bleed. Thanks for your answers!

Usually swelling indicates that something is going on. If you had no swelling after the surgery, and suddenly have swelling, it needs to be see by your orthodontist, the person that performed the surgery.

Swelling can be an indicator that there's an infection.
