Hello, I watched a great Christmas movie, black and white... on either American Movie Classics or Turner Classic Movies about 5 years ago. The movie looked to of been made in the late 40's or early 50's... It was one of those nights where I wake up on the couch and the movie is just starting so I never thought to get the name until it was too late. Here's the details and I know them as I replay this movie in my mind every Christmas..
It starts (Again a black and white movie) with a car entering a hotel parking lot. A woman gets out, it's snowing. She enters the lobby hoping for a room as the apologetic cab driver said he could go no furthur with the empending snow storm coming.
She understands and when she enters the lobby she notices a nicely dressed man in a suit talking on a Pay Phone to his family. She couldn't help but overhear and can tell his unapreciative family is more concerned if the presents in his trunk will make it to them in time.
She gets a room and goes to the pay phone and makes a call of her own that he overhears. Her's is the exact opposite. Her family can't wait to see her and the mother asks if she is bringing a man finally and that she works so hard etc etc. She doesn't want to have this discussion in the hotel lobby and tells them she will see them in the morning once the roads are cleared.
Next morning arrives and she discovers that the Taxi service can't send a car to her as the roads leading to the htoel are not cleared. She's stuck at the hotel until the Gentleman from the lobby who delt with unapreciative family members over the phone, approaches her and offers to give her a ride as he is passing through her town to get home. She recognizes him from the lobby and quickly thanks him and accepts the offer. He escorts her to his car and puts her packages in the back seat and explains the trunk is filled with presents for his family. He smile fades as she recalls the phone call he had with them from the previous night.
They enjoy a pleasant conversation along the way to the town she lives in. The drive is slow going and I believe at one point they stop so they can call their respective families. His of course is disappointed they won't have the presents to unwrap in the morning and must wait until night. Her family, of course, is glad she is okay and to arrive safe.
When they arrive in her cozy little, snow-covered town, she points to her parents' house on the right. He pulls up to the curb. She thanks him and is preceding to get out and make her way inside but is shocked to see her family gathered on the porch, excited to see her and, more elated, to see that she FINALLY brought a date with her. She turns to see that he is out of the car, and like a true gentleman, is unloading her presents and suitcases from the back seat.
Her family swarms them, excited chattter and before she can clear up the missunderstood situation, they are divided and swept up inside. By the time she is in, his coat has been whisked off and put away and a cup of coffee placed in his hand. He can't help but smile at this wonderful atmosphere. She has a quick whispered moment with him and she decides one cup of coffee wouldn't hurt, it's the least she can offer him for his generousity.
As you can imagine, from her, brilliant dialog ensues where the truth is spoken from them but is completely missinterpreted by family members. The woman is slow to correct the situation as her family is beeming she is there and she can't help but notice the gentleman is having a good time.
He asks to use the phone, she tells him there is one in the hall. She eves drops from a swinging door from the kitchen. She again overhears a one-sided conversation where his family is very annoyed that they will get their presents so late. He hangs up and she steps out into the hall. She decides that he should stay for a hot meal and have dinner with them. He graciously accepts.. they emerge from the hallway together. The family is convinced they are a couple and give one another approvaing looks and admiring glances at this new fella.
From there, there is observing moments from them on either side of the table as they get caught up in the spirit of the holiday. Laughs, stories, more coffee. He's having a great time. Then the weather report comes in. Roads dangerous. Travel should be for emergencies only. ANother whispered moment. He spends the night. Family is non the wiser to what is going on between them. Hey assumed he was staying as they felt the two of them was a couple. The dialog was brilliant as trutheful things were spoken where the real reason he's there is not discovered and the illusion of a couple exists.
The family enjoys piano playing christmas carols. He sings along and their eyes linger on one another. Everyone is having a wondeul time. When they retreat to separate bedrooms later (Modest times, back then) she sneaks to his room to wish him a good night. He assures her he'll leave in the morning. She's not so sure shw wants him to go now. She softens, smile fades. She says allright and good night. She returns to her room.
Next morning it is Christmas. Roads are clear. They are about to exchange presents. He decides that his ungrateful family doesn't desrve what he bought so he surprises the woman by announcing he has presents for everyone in the trunk of his car. This was a great scene as when he passes out the gifts, everyone gets odd clothes or toys. The family laughs at the randomness of the gifts, they never ask and just enjoy the moment and thank him.
The movie closes later that day when he can now leave and travel on the just-cleared roads. By now they are displaying feelings for one another, they share a kiss and she wants to ride with him so he doesn't have to face the ungrateful family alone... now that he has no presents to offer. The messege of course is that they will have to realize like her family knows... that being together is the most improtant thing.
The scene fades with them getting in the car and with a hearty waive from them both and the family outside in the snow looking on... the car pulls away and drives off.
