Hello, seeking information regarding a few different things, will tell it how it is: I am in Brasil with my Brasilian wife (we married in the states) and 3week old son born here in Brasil. Last Friday went to the US embassy to report "child birth abroad" and had my passport confiscated by the officer for back child support for my 21 year old son in FL -please don't start with deadbeat dad BS, there are 3 sides to every story- anyway this was a surprise being how I am a traveling chef and have been going in and out of the country for years this has never popped up. We were also in a process with the federal police to get my sons Brasilian passport, but upon confiscation of my passport I have no other picture ID just origial marriage license, birth certificate, CC, and my sons birth certificate. I am going back state side to clear up this matter, but it will take me a year according to the debt accumulated. But here are my questions 1. is there anyway possible to get an emergency visa extension without passport? 2. what are the fee's for the temporary passport, and how long is it valid before traveling? (can't seem to find that info on the US embassy web page) 3. How is it possible to continue my sons process with the Brasilian passport, since I have no pic ID? 4. will I get detained and separated from my family upon re-entry to the states? I know this is a mouth full, and I do sincerely appreciate your time & consideration!

That's an astounding story.

I would go back to the American embassy and ask those questions of the officer who confiscated your passport.

But it is strange that you don't have any other photo ID. What is a "CC"? Chef certificate, perhaps? Which state is it in which you reside and where were you born? If you don't have a driver's license, you should be aware that many state DMVs issue photo ID cards for those who want them.

The U.S. will surely issue you some kind of travel document to go back to the U.S.; can't that serve as an ID if and when you get it?

I looked on some Brazillian sites, and it seems like they have registration and Identity cards for foreigners (http://www.dpf.gov.br/servicos/estrangeiro/emitir-cedula-de-identidade-de-estrangeiro); I am not sure how they work; but did you get one of these when you arrived? Or maybe it doesn't apply to visitors? You say that you don't have any ID, so I guess you don't have this.

Reading the page on Brazil's alien's passport (http://www.dpf.gov.br/servicos/passaporte/passaporte-para-estrangeiro), it would seem like you may qualify? Since you are a "foreigner devoid of any identity or travel document". Although it may only apply to residents of Brazil or something.

Ah. The same with me. I'm an Alaska resident but have been in Florida for the past 9 years.

Call Alaska DMV and ask them to FedEx a replacement ID card to you.

1.. is there anyway possible to get an emergency visa extension without passport?
I don't know. Ask the Brazillian authorities.

2. what are the fee's for the temporary passport, and how long is it valid before traveling? (can't seem to find that info on the US embassy web page)
As I say, ask the US Embassy.

3. How is it possible to continue my sons process with the Brasilian passport, since I have no pic ID?
As I say, get a new photo ID from Alaska DMV.

4. will I get detained and separated from my family upon re-entry to the states? I
No. You are a US Citizen. You don't need a passport to be in the U.S.

Newacct's link is in Portugese. Bing Translator (http://www.bing.com/translator)seems to work best. Here is the pertinent part, translated:

"... GrantPassport may be granted to a foreigner:...
abroad arguably devoid of any identity or travel document, and you don't have to prove their nationality;abroad legally registered in Brazil and you need to leave the national territory and return, in cases that do not have travel document;..."

Thank-you for your time and interest! The Alaska DMV will send me a hard copy of my AK ID without a new photo?? (I pay Fed-X of-course) And regarding the last question and answer, I am concerned because I am in in arrears, and it is a temporary passport only good for re-entry back to the states. I am concerned of getting separated from my family in Miami To Tampa, and then going through the extridition process there….

The DMV has your picture stored electronically. They can easily create a new card.

I don't know that you need a passport to enter the US. You only need one to enter a foreign country.

Extradited? Are you wanted for a crime?

Don't mean to insult anyone who is trying to help, the way the conversation was going led me to believe that this person was not paying attention to what was being said. And no, I have many questions regarding all this, but from my initial statement whereas I was telling how my passport got confiscated and I am now in a forien country with no documents, and, this thread was supposedly started under immagration law…. Makes me got to say "hmmmmm" . I am very grateful for any info, but when I feel like I am being beat around the bush I will speak up - would not you?

Hello again, funk:

I dunno what more you want, except to badmouth us. You were TOLD to go back to the embassy. Instead you wanna do something with Alaska. You were TOLD that being a deadbeat WON'T cause you to be extradited..

Apparently, you don't believe those things. Bummer for you. I hope you learn some Portuguese.
