View Full Version : Do the risks outweigh the benefits of birth control?

I am stuck in the middle... I always use a condom and never had issues, but I always have anxiety until my next period comes. I would love for to clear up my skin and help me shed a couple of pounds, but I am afraid that the opposite could result. And do the hormones mess up the natural system of your body; is it a big change to get off the pill?

I am very hesitant to take birth control. I always use a condom, but always have a "what if" anxiety in the back of my head. On the plus sides, I'd hope that it would help clear my skin, help manage my weight, and of course be safe during sex. My skin and weight are not terribly hard to manage, but going on the pill for some women seems to do wonders for them, and would be a great added benefit. On the down sides, I do not want it to mess with my hormones and the natural ways of my body. I also do not want adverse affects such as my complexion worsening, or weight gain. Additionally, I do not want further complications with my hormones or increased possibilites of breast cancer etc. (breast cancer runs in my family).

Please help ease my worries and make the right decision!

We could write all day about this. And the stats based on reports and based on studies are constantly changing.
In general, I think you will find that most people in the medical and science community feel that the pill benefits outweigh the risk, assuming you are a healthy woman. Saying breast cancer runs in your family is too vague. It's something to discuss in detail with an OB/GYN.
The rest, about hormone manipulation, weight gain, and skin, is not something that would concern me personally, after what I have read over my 67 years. And I am not one to pop every pill a doctor wants to prescribe. You can also try it for 6 months or so and change your mind. I don't envision any permanent effects.

Condoms have a high failure rate, and it isn't always from something you notice when using one.

This is something that is unique for everyone. What is low risk for me and my wife wouldn't be for you. In my option and my current circumstances it is worth it. Could I say the same for you? Nope. I couldn't say anything for you. This is something you really need to talk to your doctor about. They can help you make an informed decision.
