You know how your throat will itch way inside to the upper right or left, and you can't itch it? Well, that's what mine is doing, along with the constant itching of my inner ear. I can't reach the itch and it's driving me crazy! It's been going on for 2 days now. I also can feel my inner ear kinds of like spasm sometimes (I think from the itchy sensation). What is up with this? It doesn't hurt, and I don't have a lack of hearing at all.

You did a good job in your description. I know exactly what you are talking about. Hate that friggin' feeling too. Sorry you are so uncomfortable.

Sounds (no pun intended) like allergies. Try taking benadryl or sudafed for a day or two and see if it starts clearing up.

Regarding allergies, we can develop new ones and outgrow old ones throughout our lives. If spring is beginning in your neck of the woods, there might be something outside irritating your system.

Yeah spring is showing it's face. I've never really had allergies before except for winter allergies (mold/mildew). But I will definitely try this. Thanks for your advice!

Recently I have been experiencing the same problem. Its to the point where I jabb my forefinger into my ear shake it around while grunting to soothe the itch in my throat. Its looks pretty ridiculous in person!!

I am a nutrition major and I heard from a holistic nutritionist that this is actually an allergy to dairy! I knew I was lactose intolerant because I would get terrible gas from eating dairy. She said that allergies change as we expose our bodies to more and more of a substance until we are severely allergic later. I suggest you document when these reactions occur and note what you have been eating and the time it occurs after what you eat. Mine come about 45 minutes after I eat some form of dairy. The other and more expensive alternative is to go see an allergist and ask their opinion. If you are in fact allergic, you should cut out all forms of dairy from your diet unless you want to deal with the intense itching...

I hope this helped!

That's really funny I have had the same problem... I have resorted to sticking my finger in my ear and shaking it around and not chewing up chips when I eat cause I like how it feels when it scratches on the way down lol. Its only been 2 days with this but if you guys figure out exactly what it is let me know... and I am definitely not allergic to dairy I have eaten that in abundence my whole life

No question it's allergies. Claratin over the counter is excellent. But you should try to get to an allergist and have a "scratch test" done to find out what you are allergic to specifically.

Yeah I have the same thing I hate it. Sometimes my eyes itch as well but I don't think that has anythng to do with it. Im very resistant to the gag reflex and sometimes actually stick my finger into the back of mouth just to itch it. I think mine might be a dairy allergy. That makes sense except I had a muesli with yoghurt for breakfast and it didn't itch till after lunch so it was something in my lunch but nothing dairy... what else could it be an allergy to?

OMG, I thought I was the only adult that went around trying to scratch my throat with my tongue...... I want to put a pipe cleaner in my ears and scratch them...(you know just put it in one ear and out the other and just go to town pulling it back and forth...)
This has been going on for several months, now.. My ears wake me up itching so bad and my throat feels like it is on fire.....
I have taken several types of antibiotics, but it is still here....... I did get some relief with some new ear drops that my ent prescribed for me.. DermOtic Oil. It does calm my ears down for a little bit...
I am going to start taking a claritin or something like that, daily, to see if that helps...
I am soooo sick of this... My throat hurts so bad, not like a regular sore throat, but like it is on fire, that I keep some of that sore throat numbing spray with me all the time.... It gives me a little relief...
So, if you have any other suggestions, I would appreciate them..
btw, I have no tonsils....

I am suffering from this as well, I find it starts in the left side of my throat then it's in my middle ear. It's so F**king annoying lol. I rub the outside of my ear so excessively that I get ear ache, in the end! It starts annoying, then ends up being painful! I'm going to go to the doctors' tomorrow! They will hopefully be able to help me! :s

Hey, I know exactly what you guys are talking about and I've been suffering from allergies for years. It may not always be from dairy products because I've developed lactose intolerance but from other things as well that I may not know about. I went to my ENT specialist because I've been suffering from the inner ear itchiness, day in day out, throat itchiness, then my eyes begin to itch. For me though, it never gets painful it's just painfully annoying. At nights I'm always trying to scratch my throat by making some kind of weird noise, or use a q-tip to try to hit the spot and when it gets horrible, it's hard to swallow or my nostrils dry up so quickly that it's difficult to breathe properly through my nose. Then my nose begins to itch so I'm going crazy at this point. Sometimes I just want someone to knock me the f*** out. Like give me an uppercup straight through my face preferably my nose.

So anyway my ENT specialist told me my tonsils are very big and the passage way is very tiny. He checked my ears and he said he could see some kind of blockage because of my tonsils. And he was like honey, your tonsils look horrible, you need to remove them. I can't wait. I'm nervous about it but I can't wait. Anything to stop this major irritability, or I will ask my boyfriend to give me a punch straight in the face to knock me out. Seriously.

Hey Guys,
I just wanted to give you all an update on my itchy ears and throat.
I got some honey from a honey/bee guy that lives right near me and started eating honey daily. Now for me this was like taking medicine because I didn't like honey... but, HONEY, let me tell you that I went back and bought a gallon of it because my throat has stopped burning and my itchy ears hardly itch, anymore.
It has been absolutely wonderful... I can not tell you how thankful that I am to have found this remedy...
I would strongly suggest that you find some LOCAL honey and start taking it, daily. See how it works for you.
I am so excited over the results that I could just shout it from my rooftop... Hope it works for you, too...
Blessings,

The reason your "inner" ear and throat both itch is due to an issue in your eustachian tube (ET). It so happens that the E Tube is a organ that travels from behind the eardrum, or the middle ear, down the side of the jaw - and to the top/back of the throat where it drains. The ET is surrounded by muscles which contract and expand in order to dilate the ET and adjust pressure behind the eardrums.
Some people actually have chronic Etube Dysfunction so that it can never equalize the pressure properly. But most of us only suffer from minor short term discomfort due to seasonal pollen type allergies, nasal membrane swelling and also ear infections.

Most likely the itching in your inner ear and throat is due to mucus draining out of the Etubes and sinuses and "tickling" the Etube and throat. This is actually normal and OK. It can also be due to a swollen Etube that is keeping fluid or mucus from draining as it should.

You can learn more about the Eustachian Tube and how it works (http://www.eustachian-tube.net/EUSTACHIAN-TUBE.html)and can malfunction here:
You can learn about a home remedy if your Etube is clogged shut and retaining fluid deep in your ear here: ear blockage remedy (http://www.earadicator.com)

Hope this helps!

I am right with you guys on this topic... I do the funny sounding scratchy noise with the back of my tongue in order to itch the back of my throat... it gives a tiny bit of relief while I'm doing it, but ends up being worse once I stop... not to mention the odd looks you get from people when you do it or annoyed family members that hear you make this sound constantly... I even do it in my sleep, haha!

I have also stuck my finger in the back of my throat and scratched it gently with my fingernail... which actually give a little more relief than the tongue-scratching deal... but still not 100% satisfaction.

I also get the out-of-the-blue intense itchy inner ear... and though I know you are not supposed to do this... I run start for the q-tips and stick one down my ear canal and spin it around gently to relieve the itch. When I am out of q-tip range, I will resort to putting my finger in my ear and shaking my ear around like a mad person, LOL.

Hey - it works - even if it's only temporary. And if you've ever experienced any of these intense itchy feelings - you know exactly what I mean! :)

I currently use Claritin daily and it definitely stops the itchy throat/ear for me... as long as I remember to take it.

Pattiallred - I am really curious about your Honey experience. I also cannot stand the taste of Honey... but I would be willing to try it if it will help. I would rather take something that is healthy and natural rather than something man-made and potentially harmful in the long run. Tell me - how much Honey do you take daily? A teaspoon full? More or Less? I am really anxious to try this method as my cousin just gave me a jar of pure Honey as a gift the other day.

OMG, Get started on the honey right away, Honey....lol...
It has been a lifesaver....
I take more than a tablespoon and I sometimes take it several times a day.
I still, sometimes, gag a little... but, I cannot stress enough how much this has helped me.
Hey, I guess it is better to eat the honey than to have to take the bee sting, huh?
Let me know how it works for you and good luck..
Remember that the closer to home the honey comes from the better it is suppose to work for you.

Thank you Pattiallred. I can't wait to try this... I'm going to try it as soon as I get home from work! Maybe if I hold my nose while I eat the Honey it won't taste so bad, LOL!! I'll definitely try it for a few days and give my feedback. THANKS!

My symptoms are:

Itchy inner ear and top of the back-left of my throat, and especially itchy in the inner lining of my nose. Also, I'm spitting out lots of mucus  coming from my nasal cavity, as opposed to coming from my throat. This began one morning after waking up with my air conditioner set to a very low temperature (I'm not so used to that), and has been going on for about 2 days. It's the beginning of June and very hot outside.

It's the end of the third day and just now, tonight, did the constant mucus stop :D . But, I now have a stuffed nose.

The Causes:

I haven't been to the doctor. I read things hear about a leaky and clogged eustachian tube, weather allergies, and dairy allergies. If a leaky EU tube leaks means mucus, and a blocked EU tube means a stuffed nose, then the EU tube is probably related… ? I get diarrhea when I drink too much milk, then need to lay off the stuff for days before I can have another sip. And is sure has gotten hotter outside.

The Cure:

Constantly rubbing the outside of my ear helps alleviate me. And so does clapping the back of my tongue with the back of my throat and the soft palate of my mouth. When I make that ugly sound when I gather all the mucus that's been building, I do that very roughly because the vibrations sooth my throat. This morning I was brushing my teeth as well as the top of my mouth. I read here that honey helps. I tried it, but nothing yet. So, I went straight to the source. I caught a honey bee outside, got some tweezers to hold it still, blew some cigarette  smoke in its face and had it sting me behind the ear. I then watched its slow death. WOW, it's working great. NO. just kidding. I will try honey.

Well, this is my problem and prognosis thus far. Do you concur? Over and out.

that is too funny about the little bee.....
but I so do understand where you are coming from.
I was about ready to jump in a hive, myself....

You get to the point where you will do anything to relieve the itching and pain...

I was just thinking, this morning, about how long it has been since I have had a sore throat, and I have NOT had one since the honey kicked in...

It has been WONDERFUL.....

I still have a little itching in the ears and throat, from time to time, but NOTHING like it use to be....

I do notice that when it does itch, that I may have missed my honey dose that morning...

I totally believe in the bee...... It works for me, anyway.

Let me know how things go with you...

Blessings and Good Luck...

Hang in there,
Patti

Since Friday, I have been taking a spoonful of honey in the morning and again in the evening whenever I started to feel my throat start to itch and it seems to be really helping! (also, my ears haven't been itching either!)

I did some research on honey and it's "healing powers" and not only is it good for burns and wounds (minor or surgical), but it's also good for arthritis, asthma, allergies, colds, flu, respiratory, digestive system, insomnia, weight loss, fatigue, and more...

Here is the article I read about honey: The healing power of honey: From burns to weak bones, raw honey can help (http://www.naturalnews.com/021506.html)

Today, I purposely didn't take my Claritin to see what would happen (I have back-up with me in case I need it) and so far, my allergies are at bay. I am going to a local fruit market tonight to pick up some more honey... I'm actually starting to like the taste of it too!!

Thanks so much for the info.... I can't wait to read it...
I am so excited for you and your relief.... No one will ever understand us until they go through this....... ok, maybe we will never be understood, but anyway...lol...
Please give me an update on your progress.... and I guess the honey is why my arthritis has been better.... go figure.... I think about you every time I take my honey and try not to  throw up taking it...... My mama says to put it in the frig to get it cold and then eat it like candy, but I say just man up and take it all in one big gulp....:p
Thanks again for the info... Have a great day and an itch free day on top of that....:p
Blessings,
Patti

Update: It's been 5 days since I took Claritin last... and I still don't need to take it. I really think the honey is helping!

I use to have to take Claritin every 24hrs on-the-dot or I would start to feel the itchy throat, eyes and nose. But since I've been taking honey, I haven't taken Claritin since last Sunday! And I still feel great!

I truly believe that honey is the cure!! I encourage anyone and everyone to try it... it's good for other things than just allergies! (read the article I linked in my last post)

I have been suffering from the same problem for a few years too. My ears rarely itch but my throat and eyes kill me! I used to make that funny noise trying to soothe my itching throat and I've been told that I do that in sleep too! Very recently I found out that this has kind of been hereditary and my mom and grand mom have the same problem too. I really 'HATE' honey but the above posts might have just convinced me to buy a jar of honey. It would definitely be at the top of my shopping list this week and I really hope it helps me too. (This post has been kind of dead for over a couple of weeks so I would really appreciate if any of the above people give updates after they started taking honey)

Hey,
I just wanted to let you know that recently I slacked off on taking my honey, not on purpose, but we opened a salon and I have been gone from home... and I really could tell a difference. I promise you I will not forget to take it anymore... I still gag most time I take it, but I am NOT going to quit... I am going to order another gallon, today, and fill up my "to go" jar. Lol...
Make sure that the honey is local honey... I think that is the key...
Good luck and keep me updated...
Blessings,

Absolutely victor88, I would be more than happy to tell you that I am still taking honey twice a day and am still having extreme success with it.

I have been consistent with the honey for nearly a month now and I have only had to take Clariton 3 times so far. And the times I took the Clariton, my allergy symptoms (itchy throat & ears) weren't even as severe as they use to be. So I probably didn't even need to take the Clariton... I only took it as a precaution.

I'm still not the biggest fan of the flavor of honey... but I don't "hate" the taste anymore. In fact, I actually look forward to it every day. And you don't have to take the Honey straight like I do… you can add it to tea, toast, etc..

I can't remember if I read it in this thread, or somewhere else, but you want to buy natural honey from a bee farm close to where you live. This is because that particular honey will have been produced by bees that live in the same environment as you, thus using the same pollens and such that may be affecting your allergies. Also, I've read that the darker the honey, the better. Darker honey contains more vitamins and minerals than lighter colored honey.

And one last thing – Buy Natural! I wouldn't buy honey that is mass produced and sitting on your local grocery store's shelf. I would go to a fruit market, or straight to the bee farm, to buy the honey. We all know that “natural” foods are better than anything you can buy that is “processed”.

Best of luck!!

Wow I didn't know this was so common. I too am a "jabber my forefinger into my ear while shaking it around to soothe the itch in my ear". A little remedy I've picked up for this is Otic Drops. Just drop one drop in each ear and put a little bit of cotton in your ear so it doesn't leak out. They seem to coat the inner ear and ease the reddness and itch. They're actually my grandmothers and she has to get them from a doctor.

You guys are hilarious and I have it right now too! Driving me f***ing nuts so I resorted to this site! I have had a sore throat cold going on and not the itchy ears which can really make you insane after a while. The q-tip is NOT helping. I will try the Claritin because I am desperate! Hope you all feel better!

OK guys. I don't have the itchy throat but my right ear drives me nuts! It's been going on for over a year! Would that be an allergy too?

Every time I read Q-tip here it reminded me of my ex husband :( I always new when he was cleaning his ears by the gagging that was going on at the same time!

I understand your issues because this is my story too, so I will cover the points that I feel are most important to the topic at hand. My tonsils were removed many years ago, so it is not the cause of my itchy ears and throat. I am lactose intolerant but I have not taken the time to go BACK to the allergist regarding my itchy ears. Though I've been to an allergist several times over the years, I was never diagnosed with having allergies. However, someone told me that I you do not ask the Allergist, specifically to test you for FOOD allergies he or she will not test you. Thus, I know that I have chronic allergies because my primary care physician perscribes me Claratin and it works wonders for me. When I take it there are no more itchy ears. Therefore, I know that just because one goes to an allergist to have test done it does not mean that the allergy test will show possitive for you having a specific allery. In other words, I know it to be true because I am a living witness because Claritin works for me. Also, several years ago, I had sinus sergery because I suffered from Chronic Sinusitis among other issues concerning my nose. During the surgery the doctor repaired several areas within my nose, and the surgery was a success. However, some of the symptoms came back such as headaches, migraines and itchy ears. For my headaches he suggested that I go to a neurologist but not before he checked my nose out again. When my ears started to itch very badly, a new ENT doctor told me that because I had the sinus surgery that I no longer had chronic sinusitis. Therefore, any nose or ear issues that I have are not related to my sinuses, such as my headaches, migranes, soars in nose or itchy ears. I said REALLY?? The bottom line is that for me, in order for me NOT to get sinus infections I must spend money to stop this madness on Claritin whether I can afford it or not, especially during the summer months. I've learned to listen to my body and watch the seanon/time of year. Sometimes I won't purchase Claritin for a particular month to save a buck as I am a broke college student who has changed careers and really cannot afford it. Thus, I will certainly find out whether I have an allergy to dairy products, even though I already know that I am lactose intolerant.

Thanks a million for everything this was certainly food for thought.

roxsyfoxy650
Sep 28, 2009, 03:29 AM
In addition to my last post, I just wanted to say if I do not make sure I purchase my Claritin on a regular basis, I usually end up getting a sinus infection. 'Also, I usually end up run down and often bed ridden for several days. Even when I manage to move around again, I will not feel back to myself until I spend money on Augmentin 1000 mg. to get rid of the sinus infection that I usually obtain from not taking my Clartin like I am suppose to. In the end, I end up having to spend my on another bottle of Claritin as well as a $30.00 on Augmentin just to pull myself together again.

Cheers.
