My kitchen sink is draining out of some kind of pipe in the garage, I didn't even know it was there until I came home to a mess. My other water areas are not leaking through this pipe. My dishwasher and the kitchen sink are the only places that are draining through this (what I am assuming is a) pipe- it an open hole in the wall below the floor line of my house. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this and how I can start to go about fixing it?

Please explained! Is this a pipe under the floor or a hole? Back to you, Tom

Hello Tom, and thanks for the reply- It's a pipe sticking out about an inch or so from the wall. It's under the floor and opens through the wall in the garage. I took a picture of it but I don't see how to attach it to my reply. I'm at a loss as to what to do and I can't afford to call a plumber, so any ideas, suggestions etc are very much appreciated! Karen

Could be a broken cleanout or one missing the cap or a broken drain line. Please post a picture so we can get a better idea of the hole.

I am working on the picture, thanks!

Looks like a piece of steel pipe. Sure no one cut something off? If you block it off with a rag, will the sink drain.

I'm thinkin' that the pipe is a cleanout and has always been open (need to get a rubber JIM CAP and cap this off).

Here, I suspect that your drain line is clogged and needs to be snaked through this open pipe... be sure the snake goes down the drain and not up the vent. You can rent an electric snake (and purchase leather gloves and goggles) at most home depot stores. Have a friend help and keep water in the drain while you snake (run kitchen sink slowly so water doesn't come out of the open pipe but can be seen/heard as you snake).

To confirm my suspicion, plug the open pipe with a rag and then see if the sink backs up when you run water (give it a little time). If water backs up, wait until water disappears before removing the rag and proceed as outlined. If the sink drains fine, purchase the JIM CAP (1.2" or 2".. can't tell from here) and cap the pipe... ;)

Good luck!
