View Full Version : Toilet does not usually fully flush

I just bought a house and the toilet on the main floor will only fully flush approximately 1 out of 10 times. The rest of the time the tank empties and the water swirls and goes down but will not fully evacuate the bowl, usually leaving some contents behind. I have checked the tank and everything looks fine there. IT does not seem to be clogged. Any suggestions?

Hi Greg and welcome, If just one toilet is the problem. I would start by using a toilet auger shown here

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Hi Parttime,

It is just the one (of 3) toilets that is the problem. I picked up an auger and had a hard time getting it in farther than 4-5 inches to start. I finally got it past that point, and with a few other points of resistance made it all the way. It remained a challenge to push in through each of the trouble zones every time I tried. Also, the first time in, I noticed a small white cloud come out when I pushed through the 1st trouble spot mentioned above. At that point (remembering I have hard water) I thought that maybe there was calcium buildup. So I used CLR overnight. I have found that it flushes better but still does not flush fully every time. Tonight I am going to drain the water and put a little CLR in the spout in the upper tank and some in the bowl and let it sit overnight. Do you think I should just keep repeating CLR and auger and it will keep improving?

Thanks for the advice.

Greg

Hi Greg, sounds like you're close to the problem, it won't hurt to try a few more times, but you may end up pulling the toilet to clear it. It's hard to say what the previous owner put in there. Keep us informed on the progress.
