Long overdue! we have a plan to avoid, or at least get early warning of the next asteroid strike
UN to establish asteroid defence plan - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) (http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-10-29/un-to-establish-asteroid-defence-plan/5056210)
Before anyone decides this is chicken little stuff, the people of Russia didn't think so earlier in the year. So they have had two hits we know of in a century. That's just a little too frequent for an event we didn't see coming, and we are now getting regular reports of flybys, several a year. When you examine the big craters, plot their trajectories and see the impacts, some things become obvious. More of these big asteroids impact in the northern hemisphere and we are about due for the next one.
The UN, in its collective wisdom, has decided to have a plan. If it works out like most UN plans there will be much talk and little action and numerous UN officials telling everyone what to do. It isn't as though nothing is already been done, but you can't leave the UN out of a good fund raiser
