I've been taking (I was prescribed) Tramadol for pain killers (I was assaulted by my now ex boyfriend). When the ER doc was writing the script I told him I am allergic to opiates so he said he would prescribe an alternate. So he prescribed Tramadol. I also told him I cannot take any controlled substances because I am on probation. I went to report today to my PO, I showed her my prescription. She then sent me to do a UA, which is fine. I tested positive for benzos. I HAVE NOT taken ANYTHING other than the Tramadol that was prescribed to me! My PO said I should not have tested positive for anything and sent it to the lab. I'm so worried that I might get violated, possibly revoked because of something I DIDN'T take! Can anyone help? I now feel like I've been assaulted all over again...

Tramadol should not cause a false positive for a benzo. If the test was a rapid screening test it might have been a defective test. It is a good thing they are sending the sample to a lab for a confirmation test. The confirmation test should be done via the GC/MS method which is the "gold standard" for drug testing. Hopefully they sent the sample with the proper chain of custody so you can be sure it was your sample they tested. I would be surprised if the GC/MS test came back positive for benzos.

Depending on the test they do and how they do it, you may or may not test positive for benzos. You should be able to get the test results and there they should have a test number. That will tell you what test they did and what would cause a false positive. You should go back swinging at the PO and ask for a more accurate secondary test for Benzos. They might do that anyway. A quick test to see if they need to do a more stringent test.

Don't let them bully you here. Make sure that you're honest and make sure that you're straight forward.

Good luck.
