Hi Doc, My mother is 54 year old, We are seeing three symptoms of her body
1. Swelling in feet/legs
2. Breathing problem
3. Weakness/tiredness.

As per the recent HB test, her blood is 6.7.. could you please suggest what we can do ? And if all above
Symptoms are of blood deficiency ?

"could you please suggest what we can do ?" That is what doctors are for. 6.7 is low. What did the doctors say or suggest about a level like that?

Hi.. doctors suggested to have 2 units of blood to be given to patient as 6.7 is low.
But I would like to know if Swelling in feet/legs is also symptom of blood deficiency ?

And should we given blood to patient ?

Below is Past History

She is diabetic patient from almost 7 years. In recent days she was caught with stomach infections,
No stool was passed in those 3-4 days.. and her liver size was also got large.. and she was also caught
With jaundice.. then we have medical treatment from doctor... now her stool/urine pass is normal... her jaundice is 1.7,
She is well, can speak well, eat well... but she feels tiredness, she has swelling in legs/feet... and she has
Some problem in breathing.

I had gone into the hospital several years ago with similar symptoms and was told my reading was 5.8. "No wonder you're as white as a sheet, always feel cold, and have no energy," the ER doctor told me.

Normal results vary, but in general are: Male: 13.8 to 17.2 gm/dL and Female: 12.1 to 15.1 gm/dL.

I was admitted to the hospital and received three units blood. Since then, I have eaten iron-rich foods and taken a daily multiple vitamin that includes iron.

Ask her doctor about what she should do now in light of her other problems. I would think giving her blood transfusions would help in many ways..

Hi Wondergirl,

Thanks..

I would like to know if Swelling in feet/legs is also symptom of blood deficiency ?

I know other two.. weakness and problem in breathing are symptoms of blood deficiency.

And can we transfuse blood as per patient previous history ? Will it has any side effect ?

These are questions you are going to have to ask your doctor. The swelling could be from inactivity because she is so fatigued and weak and doesn't move around as much as she used to. It could be a circulation problem related to anemia. I don't know..

If she feels better after the transfusions and is able to move around again with energy and is breathing better, I would think her other problems would also benefit. A blood transfusion isn't like a medication that has side effects.

I improved after three units of blood were given to me. I even noticed that the male night nurse was very handsome. :) I wouldn't have noticed him if my body was still so weak and sick.

" I even noticed that the male night nurse was very handsome. I wouldn't have noticed him if my body was still so weak and sick". How times have changed, 1 generation ago male nurses were almost non existent. My oldest son, now 43, started as BSN> RN> PA> MS with major in Urology. I used to visit him in Nursing School and the women were just" Can you help me ........" Oh Yeh, glad to! Good point about transfusion, no side effects.
