Hi, my husband and I just bought a wall-mounted American Standard toilet to replace our ancient wall-mounted Kohler. We are having a LOT of trouble getting the tank to attach to the bowl. With the tank gasket/sponge washer in place, the tank wobbles like crazy, not just a little, but a LOT, no matter how much we tighten the bolts. Without the gasket, the tank fits perfectly. From my limited knowledge though, it seems the gasket is kind of an essential part... It almost seems like it's too big, but it came as part of the toilet set, so it should be the right one! Any suggestions? We are very stressed and of course my husband doesn't want a plumber.

Sometimes you need to really tighten the tank bolts to get the tank to not wobble. There are usually some raised "bumps" and you tighten the tank down to them. Yes, the spud ring is needed.

What do you mean by raised bumps? We have tried tightening the tank bolts as tight as possible and it still isn't right...

Ma0641 is dating himself a bit, Noodlesmom...toilet tanks don't have raised bumps on them anymore... ;)

Something is up here... you should not be able to tighten the bolts as much as you have without cracking the toilet.

Unless you can post pictures of the tank, gasket and all other parts it really is hard to say from here, but as you know, this should be a super easy job so something's up!

Back to you...
