I load my MACs one way and it always works.
You will need the following:
Working MAC computer to work in.
The OS image (dmg file)
USB Flash 8 GB or bigger.
Start the MAC, log in and insert the USB Stick.
Copy the MacOS dmg file to the desktop.
Mount the dmg file by double click on it.
Find and run the "Disk Utility" on the MAC.
On the left you should find a list of your hard drive and USB flash. Bellow that you should see the dmg file has loaded (dmg or MacOSX or something like that).
Now click on the flash drive.
Click on the "Partition" tab. (Next steps are very important)
The fomat must be "mac os extended journaled".
Click "Volume Scheme" list and select "1 Partition"
Click on "Option" bottom
Click on "GUID Partition Table"
Click OK and Apply.
Now click on the flash drive again.
Click on the "Restore" tab.
You will now see a box for Source and Destination.
From the left, drag the USB Flash to "Destination"
From the left, drag the OSX Image to "Source"
Now click restore. Wait then Done.
To boot from USB:
1 - Shutdown MAC
2 - Insert USB
3 - Hold down Alt button
4 - Power on the Mac and wait for boot choice and select USB.
Once install has loaded. Go to disk utility first and format you local hard drive.
Hope this helps
