This is my first time to ask a question online like this, but I am tired of the tech support emails and phone chats. Anyway, I am running XP Home and suddenly my dvd drive quit on me. It worked fine 3 days ago and now it doing nothing. I have a JLMS DVD-ROM LTD163D. I put a disc in and the light on the drive blinks, and it sounds like its doing something and then nothing. I click on the drive and it says to put a disc into the drive. As I have read on some of the questions already posted, I have tried going to the device manager and uninstalling the drive. That didn't work, so then I tried to uninstall the Secondary IDE Channel, and that didn't work. So now I have come here to ask the experts. Thank you in advance for all those who help.

Sincerely,
TheSynergy

Hi,
Welcome to askmehelpdesk. I hope we can help you.
Have you used a CD cleaner in your drive?
You can buy a CD that inserts into the drive, and cleans the infrared parts automatically.
If that doesn't work, you might want to check out this forum website, with problems relating to your drive:

If your drive is old, like maybe a couple of years, it could be just plain going bad. Please check out the website above for some ideas.; also, have you been to the manufacturer's website, to look for firmware upgrades?

Best of luck,
fredg

Do you get any lights on the drive during bootup?

Can you boot from the CD drive (i.e. by putting in a windows install cd)?

Check the IDE connections on the back of the drive, make sure they have not wiggled off.

I've tried to upgrade the "firmware" and that didn't work. I do have a light on when the computer is booting. I put the cd in and the light flashes and then it stops. I click on the drive and it says to put a disc in. I am going to take it apart to see if anything came loose, so I'll see what happens.
Thanks again!

Well, everything is connected good and tight, and I also tried the cd lens cleaner and that didn't work either. Any other suggestions? Thanks!

what computer is it, some have driver updates to fix problems like that because they find them later, I currently run a 48x dvd-rom cdr/cdrw drive with xp and my PC maker had drivers out for that because it would cause problems while trying to read certain type disks. Try your PC manufacturer's website for that if it's a store bought system not built. If its not that then it may just be the rom manufacturer's problem and it be that they had driver problems. Oh and if you are not afraid to loose anything back it up and restore the system back to before you had the problems. May be some spyware at work, had that on my 98 machine before
