How do I eliminate apps from my dashboard?

Of my MAC
When I slide my mouse to the lower left, things like the date, dictionary, and stock quotes appear. And several more. Even my printer. How to I eliminate those that I don't want to see?

OK, someone else will have ot answer that... I have minimal experience with a Mac.
