It's a big bug. Fuzzy red with black stripes. Kind of resembles a bee and an ant but doesn't fly. Pretty hard to kill. I've seen pictures of a velvet ant or cowkiller ant and it doesn't look to be the same as to what I'm referring to.

The Velvet Ant is what comes to mind. Where are you located? Is it possible to get a picture of it?

I'm sure it some species of velvet ant. Males and females look different. The red / black and hard exoskeleton are indication. .

Velvet Ant wasps come in a variety of colors. You can find red, white, yellow, orange, just about any color. The common factor is the female spending some time wingless and the furry appearance. Here's my favorite (I think a filter was used)
